Why So Many Teens Feel Lost, and What Actually Helps

I have spent years working with youth in my community, and I keep meeting the same young person: bright, capable, kind, full of potential, and completely unsure of what comes next. They are anxious about the future, overwhelmed by school, and quietly convinced that everyone else has life figured out while they do not.

What I see is not a lack of intelligence or ambition. It is a lack of clarity. Most young people have never been given the chance to slow down, work out who they are, name what actually matters to them, and picture a future that feels like theirs rather than one that satisfies somebody else’s expectations.

It is not about having all the answers

Adults often reach for the word unmotivated. But nobody is motivated toward nothing. Motivation follows direction, it does not create it. When a young person can see where they are going and why it matters to them, the effort question mostly answers itself.

Lasting confidence does not come from an adult telling a teenager what to do. It comes from helping them find the answers themselves. When they understand their own strengths, values and interests, they stop measuring themselves against everyone around them and start making decisions they genuinely believe in.

Success looks different for everyone

One of the heaviest pressures young people carry is the belief that there is only one right path. I do not believe that for a moment.

For one student, success is university. For another it is the trades, or entrepreneurship, or a gap year, or a route nobody in their family has taken before. The goal was never to fit someone else’s definition of success. It is to help each young person build a future that lines up with who they are, what they value, and the life they want to create.

A message to parents

As a mother of two daughters, I have watched how fast childhood turns into adulthood. We ask our children to make significant decisions about their future while they are still working out who they are.

That realisation is what led me to train as a professional coach. I wanted to give young people something I think everyone deserves: a safe, supportive space to think out loud, ask questions, build confidence and find their own direction. If your teen seems lost, they usually do not need a louder push. They need a clearer picture of where they are going.
