I didn’t fall into entrepreneurship. I chose it.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and after my last position at Grant Thornton I was three exams away from becoming a Chartered Accountant. I had the opportunity to continue at another CA firm and complete my designation. Instead, I made the intentional decision to start my own business.
The reason was simple: I wanted more control over my time so I could be present for my children. My husband was already working 10 to 12 hour days as a lawyer, and with no family support in Canada, it wasn’t realistic for both of us to have demanding professional careers with such long hours. I also genuinely loved being a mom, and I wanted the flexibility to be there for my family.
Around that time I enrolled in SEEDS, an intensive three-month, full-time entrepreneurship program that taught me how to build and run a business. That experience gave me both the confidence and the foundation to launch my own accounting firm.
More than twenty years and several businesses later, including helping build the law firm I am still part of today, I can tell you the difference between the ideas that survive and the ones that don’t. It was almost never talent, and almost always planning.
Map before you build
Business mapping means turning your idea into a clear, workable model on paper before you spend a dollar: who is it for, what problem does it solve, how does money come in, what does it cost to deliver, and what has to be true for the numbers to work. If the map doesn’t work, the business won’t either, and it’s much cheaper to fix a map.
The three numbers most new owners skip
- Your real monthly cost of operatingincluding the salary you need to live
- Your break-even pointor how many sales it takes to pay the bills
- Your runwayor how many months you can operate before the business must feed itself
This is where my accounting background earns its keep: budgeting isn’t the boring part of entrepreneurship, it’s the part that keeps you in the game long enough to win.
Fear is normal. Growth is a choice.
Every entrepreneur I coach hits the same wall: the fear of moving forward. Fear doesn’t disappear; what changes is what you decide to do next. Growth is a choice you make, and then keep making. The cure isn’t confidence, it’s clarity: a mapped plan, honest numbers, and the next concrete step. That’s exactly what entrepreneurship coaching is for.
